Savannah monitor Varanus exanthematicus
Animals in our sanctuary
Anthé was found on the streets together with another Savannah monitor. They were probably left behind by their previous owner. The fire brigade caught the animals, which were in very bad health, and took them to Wildtier - und Artenschutzstation in Sachsenhagen (D). For Anthé the help arrived just in time and was fully recovered. Unfortunately, the other animal did not survive.
Jappe was confiscated together with leopard gecko Ekko. They were kept in two separate terrariums that were far too small for these animals. They also didn't receive proper care. Fortunately both animals could be taken out of this situation. Unfortunately they were too domesticated and could not go back to nature.

Where does he feel most at home?
The savannah monitor lives in dry and arid areas such as steppes, arid grasslands and semi-deserts, but the animal likes to swim and will usually stays near water.
What's his favourite food?
They like to eat eggs, but will also eat all kinds of reptiles, birds, small mammals and larger insects.
The savannah monitor will use its big and heavy tail when threatened by enemies like snakes or birds of prey. It can give blows with its tail that a predator will not soon forget, but also the long teeth in the jaws are better avoided.Adopt this Savannah monitor
