Hermann's tortoise

Animals in our sanctuary

Helena
Date of birth
05-09-2005
Date taken in
27-02-2011
Helena

Helena, Zefiros and Thanos were taken care of on 14/01/2012.

They were found in a forest by a VOC. Probably an owner who no longer wanted to care for the animals and left them in the forest. The VOC brought the animals to De Zonnegloed where they now live together with the Tamarins and the green iguanas.

Squirtle
Date of birth
01-01-2001
Date taken in
08-11-2019
Squirtle

Squirtle was confiscated when it became clear that the owner had no official CITES papers for the animal. This makes her history and age unknown. The only thing we know for sure is that she was obtained in an illegal way.

Rosy
Date of birth
01-01-2001
Date taken in
08-11-2019
Rosy

Rosy is one of the many turtles that are kept by private individuals, but who cannot take care of the animals. The animals are brought in by a private person at a rescue centre or are collected after they have been dumped and found by other people.

Luciana
Date of birth
01-01-1994
Date taken in
25-04-2021
Luciana

Luciana comes from a man who was told that he is incurably ill. Because this species requires a lot of special care and attention, he went looking for a suitable shelter. Luckily, there was still place for her here.

Liliana
Date of birth
01-01-1995

Merlot
Date taken in

Merlot

Merlot was abandoned together with 3 other Greek tortoises at the gate of an animal shelter. These foundlings were not microchipped and did not have the necessary CITES documents. It is therefore likely that they were illegally kept by an owner who was no longer able to care of them.
