Buteo is one of the many birds of prey that are kept by private individuals in a much too small aviary or even tied up. Due to circumstances they are afterwards ceded or abandoned. Buteo was brought into a reception center and can now enjoy a new life in De Zonnegloed.

Abu was bred by a falconer, but was brought to an animal shelter due to circumstances. Now she and Buteo can enjoy a new life in De Zonnegloed in a spacious aviary.


Where does he feel most at home?

The long-legged buzzard occurs in barren mountainous countries, but feels best at home on open plains. You can find them in North Africa, Southern Europe and West Asia.

What’s his favourite food?

They mainly eat small rodents, but they wouldn’t mind a lizard, snake, small bird or large insect now and then.

Fun fact

It is very difficult to recognize the long-legged buzzard, as they’re very similar to the common buzzard.
